The Colorado Association of Black Professional Engineers and Scientists (CABPES) is taking the initiative to help students prepare for the upcoming school year. CABPES has started a summer math program to help students learn the fundamentals needed for most math courses. Although this is the first year for the summer math program, CABPES has held math programs for 20 years during school year.

Esperanza Bosworth teaches the course and is the CABPES Math Enrichment Program Coordinator as well as a math teacher at Rishel Middle School. From her experiences, Bosworth has witnessed that kids are not "getting the right concepts for math and learn to rely on the use of calculators". Her goal with this program is to help students in middle and high school fill in their learning gaps while challenging younger students to improve their math skills.

The course curriculum concentrates on order of operations, integers, fractions, and other fundamental math functions. As part of the curriculum, each student is required to take notes and study them to help improve their skills. In addition to Bosworth, there are also student tutors that help their peers.

CABPES Executive Director, Francie Miran, commented, "We are excited to ensure that our students are prepared for their math studies this fall." The summer math program has 25-35 students and is full. For information about the fall math program, contact Jackie Davis at (303) 329-6251 or go online at cabpes.org.
